Seeding Rates

Seeding rates vary for lawns depending on the conditions you are attempting to improve in your lawn. Seed is applied at a rate of LBS/SQ.FT.

Over Seeding: 5-8lbs / 1000sq.ft. | Spot Seeding: 10-12lbs / 1000sq.ft.

We can completely customize the rate of seed you want applied for this essential lawn service. No matter if you want a light overseeding lawn to keep introducing new seed to your lawn or you need some area heavier than others to fix some bare and thinning areas.

Over Seeding

Prior to lawn seeding, we recommend a close, bagged mowing at time of application to allow the seed to penetrate the soil level. Over Seeding is a great way to build and maintain your lawns thickness and overall health. Over seeding has a long term approach like retirement savings, put the seed out there and let it do its thing. In the coming seasons you will see that seed comes up and slowly thicken your lawn to a healthy lush appearance.  Pair this service with Plug Aeration service.

Spot Seeding

For bare spots requiring lawn restoration , we break the soil and cultivate it, lightly work the seed in with raking, and cover the area with peat or larger areas a lawn blanket to ensure it has the best chance to grow. Patching spots not only raises the overall appearance of your lawn, it will lessen the ability of weeds to take over bare spots.

Spring or Fall?

Both times of the year are effective for overseeding lawns because of the soil temperature ranges during these seasons. Some things to consider are this:

Spring:

PRO: Benefit of natural moisture is greater & Allows entire season for grass to mature

CON: Limits herbicide use that controls weeds & weeds tend to grow as much as new grass

Fall:

PRO: Most weeds grow in spring and can be combated & less chance to grow weeds as most are controlled and done growing this season

CON: Limited lawn seeding time before winter dormant period

Our Recommendation: fight weeds in the spring grow grass in the fall

Temperature Timing

Ground temperatures determine specific timing of lawn seeding to ensure effective germination. We consult the county extension office for predictive and historical data on soil temperatures specific to Pottawattamie county. Cool season grasses like Fescue and Kentucky blue need temperatures around 55F. As a general rule we seed in the spring after the first week of April and the last week of August for fall. For seeding dates, check our Service Calendar.

Watering Frequency

Like all living things water is essential. A slow steady watering is best because it allows the water to soak in and not just run off your lawn. New seed needs to remain moist throughout the day, using peat moss or lawn blankets for bare areas can help moisture levels remain stable, but you may need to water a few times throughout the day especially in areas that get a high amount of sun to make your lawn seeding service effective.

Germination

Under ideal temperature and water conditions your new lawn seeding will germinate in approximately 7-10 days. At that point you can begin to reduce your watering frequency slowly. New grass is extremely fragile so watering during the highest temperatures of the day is essential. Yes you can reduce water, be careful not to let your new grass burn up or dry out it will die.

Don't Forget the Fertilizer

Trying to grow new grass from lawn seeding without fertilizer? Good luck. A fertilizing plan doesn't fix all your new grass problems but it can help ensure it stays healthy enough to allow it to mature, increasing your lawn restoration chances.  Just like you wouldn't spend bottom dollar on security to protect your valuables don't waste good money on seed by skipping on the fertilizer.

Soil Issue

If a soil issue is suspected it is recommended to get a soil sample analysis to determine the exact issue. Local companies can provide these tests for as low as $30-40.

Soil amendment products and aeration services are also a great way to improve and prepare your lawn for new lawn seeding service. These services help build and repair the very soil structure changing your low quality soil into high quality soil.
