Lawn Seeding

Veteran Lawn Services Seeding Logo

Certified Seed

We source our professional grade seed locally from a certified cultivar, they use the very same stuff on their sod farms. These select hybrids are genetically modified to perform Council Bluffs' Midwest climate and feature blends specifically for High Heat and Shade. We suggest FALL for best lawn seeding results but Spring is a great alternative if you have large areas of bare soil to improve.

Customer care is as easy as regularly watering your lawn to keep the soil moist allowing to the seed germinate and grow.

Spot Seeding: For bare spots, we break the soil, lightly work the seed in with raking, and cover the area with peat to ensure it has the best chance to grow. Patching spots not only raises the overall appearance of your lawn, it will lessen broad leaf weed's ability to take over bare spots.

Over Seeding: We recommend a close, bagged mowing at time of application to allow the seed to penetrate the soil level. Over Seeding is a great way to build and maintain your lawns thickness and overall health.

Application Rates

Application rates vary for lawn seeding depending on the conditions you are attempting to improve in your lawn. Seed is applied at a rate of LBS/SQ.FT.

Over Seeding: 5-8lbs / 1000sq.ft. | Spot Seeding: 10-12lbs / 1000sq.ft.

We can completely customize the rate of seed you want applied for this essential lawn service. No matter if you want a light over seeding to keep introducing new seed to your lawn or you need some area heavier than others to fix some bare and thinning areas.

Over Seeding

Prior to lawn seeding, we recommend a close, bagged mowing at time of application to allow the seed to penetrate the soil level. Over Seeding is a great way to build and maintain your lawns thickness and overall health.

Spot Seeding

For bare spots, we break the soil and cultivate it, lightly work the seed in with raking, and cover the area with peat to ensure it has the best chance to grow. Patching spots not only raises the overall appearance of your lawn, it will lessen the ability of weeds to take over bare spots.

Spring & Fall Renewal

Our Spring/Fall Renewal Program offers the three essential products for improving lawns: Seed, Fertilizer, Aeration. Bundle all three and receive a discount by combining these three into one lawn seeding service.

Timing

Ground temperatures determine specific timing of lawn seeding to ensure effective germination. We consult the county extension office for predictive and historical data on soil temperatures specific to Pottawattamie county. As a general rule we seed in the spring after the first week of April and the last week of August for fall. For seeding dates, check our Service Calendar.

Watering and Germination

Like all living things water is essential. A slow steady watering is best because it allows the water to soak in and not just run off your lawn. New seed needs to remain moist throughout the day, using peat moss or lawn blankets for bare areas can help moisture levels remain stable, but you may need to water a few times throughout the day especially in areas that get a high amount of sun. Under ideal temperature and water conditions your new seed will germinate in approximately 7-10 days. At that point you can begin to reduce your watering frequency slowly. New grass is extremely fragile so watering during the highest temperatures of the day is essential.

Cutting New Grass

New grass should be allowed to grow over 6 inches before cutting it for the first time. When you do cut it for the first time never cut more than 1/3 of the total length or 2 inches maximum from the plant.
